MATC APRIL 10, 2011 CRUISE
By Bea Zastrow
The promised warm sunny day was a bit slow in coming as 25 MATC members
gathered to start our tour, but the sun finally emerged during our drive and it
warmed up a bit. We were pleased to have new MATC members, Carol & Marvin
Schroll, join us in the caravan of 12 vehicles. There were ten T'Birds - one each:
'59, '60, '62, '63, '64, and 5 Retro Birds. We started out with 11 vehicles and
picked up Skip & Barbara Panowitz at a pre-arranged location on the way.
Although we planned to stay together, every car was given a map to ease any
worries of getting lost in the boondocks. Walkie Talkies and cell phones were
used to communicate among the cars and Phyllis Cherry did a great job serving
as "tail-end Charlie" to keep the lead car advised when everyone had made a
turn or gotten thru a traffic light. We only got separated once when the leader, Earl
Zastrow, realized too late that he should have pulled over to let cars catch up
before making one turn. But thanks to cell phones we got together again without
too much lost time. The route took us over back roads with very little traffic, great
rural scenery - some with running streams. A wild turkey and a possible beaver
dam were sighted along the way. Some of the roads were gravel and some had
one-lane bridges, two of which were covered. We stopped at the second covered
bridge for a photo op, and then proceeded to enjoy good food and fellowship at
Liberty Road Seafood & Steak on Rt. 26.
PS: It was a good thing that we were able to do the cruise on the 10th, because
our "rain date" was the following Saturday, the 16th, when it did just that - it rained
all day and caused flooding in a number of areas in Frederick County, including
part of the cruise route. Bennies Hill, our very first road on the tour was closed,
followed by Poffenberger Road which probably was too because it has
permanent "flood area" warning signs. Other areas on our route were affected as
well.
